Self-Healing Phone Battery Is The Future
Don’t you just hate it when your phone battery dies while you’re in the middle of a conversation, or that your phone’s battery doesn’t last as long as you need it to. This is the one limitation of modern phones, and technology as a whole. But this is a limitation that will soon be removed from all our handheld portable devices.
Researchers from Stanford University, and the Department of Energy (DOE) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have invented the very first self-healing battery. The fact that a large number of the population are heavily reliant on their phones for more than calls, means these devices are being used all day long. This heavy use means more charging, which in turn means the battery is also being tested and worked to its limit.
Carrying chargers will be a thing of the past
The one reason self healing batteries will be a worthy addition is entirely due to the impact it will have on the longevity of plants and animals. Current batteries become less efficient until they eventually stop working. This is because the charging process causes them to expand and shrink, and over time this cracks the silicon. Once the silicon is damaged it no longer effectively stores electrons.
To reduce and hopefully stop this wear and tear, a stretchy polymer coating has been invented. This will surround the electrode keeping it bound, which will heal any cracks that appear over time. This small change has created the self-healing battery.
This small improvement could mean longer battery lives in phones, cars, and all the other mobile devices that add so much to our day to day life. The goal is that phones will be able to go through 500 charge-discharge cycles, and electric vehicles will be able to go through 3,000 cycles. At the moment the new self-healing battery works for 100 cycles which is still a huge improvement on batteries as they exist. But since the technology is proven to work, it is only time before the goals are met and then surpassed. The one bonus will be you no longer need to carry your phone charger or chargers on you everywhere you go.
