About 1 in 10 people are British expats in the UK. It is estimated
estimated 5.5m British people live permanently abroad – almost one in 10 of the UK population. The emigration of British people has happened in cycles over 200 years. The trend is now rising again: some 2,000 British citizens moved permanently away from the UK every week in 2005.

British Expats Retiring Abroad

British Expat Retirement Planning
Brits abroad may have to move their UK pensions offshore to a Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) or a Qualifying Recognized Overseas Pension Plan (QROPS).
Defined contribution (or money purchase) UK pensions can be transferred to a SIPP or a QROPS.
A SIPP can be transferred to a QROPS.
What is a SIPP? A self-invested personal pension (SIPP) is a pension ‘wrapper’ that allows you to save, invest and build up a pot of money for when you retire. It is a type of personal pension and works in a similar way to a standard personal pension.
What is a QROPS? A Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme, or QROPS is an overseas pension scheme that meets certain requirements set by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. A QROPS and it can receive transfers of British pension benefits.
