What is Expat Health Insurance?

In the UK, health insurance costs are all covered by the National Health Service (NHS).

Am I Covered by the NHS as an Expat?

No! If you’re moving abroad on a permanent basis, you’ll no longer automatically be entitled to medical treatment under normal NHS rules. This is because the NHS is a residence-based healthcare system. Read more.

As soon as you are an expatriate and resident overseas, you are no longer covered by the NHS, even if you fly back to the UK. You need health insurance when abroad to cover sickness, accidents and critical illness such as cancer which can cost up to $1m or more in treatment costs.

What Types of Expat Health Insurance are There?

Inpatient and outpatient expat insurance

Inpatient insurance covers overnight stays and longer at a hospital. Inpatient insurance only applies if you spend a night in the hospital.

Outpatient insurance covers trips to your local doctor at a clinic.

Some people opt to only cover inpatient insurance only to cover the huge costs of cancer treatment and serious illnesses. Then, they just pay all the fees to their local doctor if they fall ill.

Premium health insurance covers both inpatient and outpatient insurance.
